God Gives Us the Holy Spirit

Recently, one of my former students expressed to me: the feeling of sadness at having failed to experience a full-on revival. For those who missed a divine outpouring, it can fill us with jealousy, the feeling of having missed out, and even of impatience at having to endure the stories of those who were caught up in the chaotic, miraculous atmosphere of the Spirit falling in a tidal wave of power.
But in my conversation with this student, I found myself struck again by the truth of Jesus’ words: “I will not leave you as orphans. I will send you another helper…the Holy Spirit. And it is through the Holy Spirit that even now Jesus and the Father come to us. It is through the Spirit that the Father draws near to us, gives us significant dreams in the night, and moves people to express divine wisdom and encouragement to us. It is through the Spirit the he makes our broken selves whole and turns negative prognoses into mended bodies. It is through the Spirit that he speaks to us in various ways to tell us that we have value and that he loves us, to tell us that we are not alone. And even though these experiences are not as spectacular as the experiences of full-blown revival, these things matter.
This is God touching our lives, interacting with us in real time. This is real. This is impactful. This is transformative. This is ongoing.
